A 400-year-old banyan tree that was in the centre of a protest against a highway project in Maharashtra’s Sangli district will remain unharmed, Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray announced in a tweet today.
Mr Thackeray said that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has shelved plans to cut the tree which was coming in the path of a road construction project. Instead the NHAI will realign the highway close to the tree, he said.“The 400 year old banyan tree in Sangli district that we saved with a letter to @NHAI_Official. One can see the highway close to the tree. That, now will be realigned to save the tree. The tree is a keeper of legends, folklore and memories of many who played there as children,” he tweeted

As we have been seeing that since many area wherever there is a road construction project, got to see that almost trees have been cut down which comes in the path ways rather realignment of directions. but in above case we might see there is cultural attachment of community with Banyan tree and since 4 century commnuity is having bonding and traditions with Banyan tree and eventually they had to come together and saved it from cutting down, as we relate many things with commons as memory, traditions, worship and linkages between community that has been in past that may be the role playing model to work with community in addressing and saving and strengthening common properties.
Thank you.

Just wondering If there are other such instances in different parts of the country. How effective is public action in protecting landmark trees
